Cytokinesis: Rho Marks the Spot
نویسنده
چکیده
During cytokinesis of a eukaryotic cell, following the chromosome movements of anaphase, a contractile ring forms in the cortex midway between the segregating chromosomes and divides the cell into two daughters. Recent studies have provided new insights into the mechanism by which the site of contractile ring assembly is specified.

Movement of a cytokinesis factor cdc12p to the site of cell division
A key question in cytokinesis is how the plane of cell division is positioned within the cell. Although a number of cytokinesis factors involved in formation of the actomyosin contractile ring have been identified, little is known about how these factors are localized and assembled at the cell-division site. Cells of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe divide using a medial actomyosin r...
متن کاملRoles of Rho-associated Kinase in Cytokinesis; Mutations in Rho-associated Kinase Phosphorylation Sites Impair Cytokinetic Segregation of Glial Filaments
Rho-associated kinase (Rho-kinase), which is activated by the small GTPase Rho, regulates formation of stress fibers and focal adhesions, myosin fiber organization, and neurite retraction through the phosphorylation of cytoskeletal proteins, including myosin light chain, the ERM family proteins (ezrin, radixin, and moesin) and adducin. Rho-kinase was found to phosphorylate a type III intermedia...
متن کاملCYK-4 regulates Rac, but not Rho, during cytokinesis
Cytokinesis is driven by constriction of an actomyosin contractile ring that is controlled by Rho-family small GTPases. Rho, activated by the guanine-nucleotide exchange factor ECT-2, is upstream of both myosin-II activation and diaphanous formin-mediated filamentous actin (f-actin) assembly, which drive ring constriction. The role for Rac and its regulators is more controversial, but, based on...
متن کاملControl of the cytokinetic apparatus by flux of the Rho GTPases.
Cytokinesis in animal cells is powered by the cytokinetic apparatus, a ring of filamentous actin and myosin-2 that underlies the plasma membrane and closes between the separating chromosomes. Formation of the cytokinetic apparatus is at least partially dependent on the small GTPase, Rho. Similar to other small GTPases, Rho cycles between the active (GTP-bound) and inactive (GDP-bound) states. B...
متن کاملRho and Anillin-dependent Control of mDia2 Localization and Function in Cytokinesis
Diaphanous-related formin, mDia, is an actin nucleation/polymerization factor functioning downstream of the small GTPase Rho. Although Rho is critically involved in cytokinesis, it remains elusive how Rho effectors and other regulators of cytoskeletons work together to accomplish this process. Here we focused on mDia2, an mDia isoform involved in cytokinesis of NIH 3T3 cells, and analyzed mecha...
